FAMILIES are likely to save £45 on annual bills under plans to generate renewable energy close to areas of high demand.

They will benefit as ministers aim to match supply and demand by building wind turbines and solar farms near towns and cities.

A quarter of renewable supply is in Scotland and there is a lack of grid connections to carry it.

The introduction of zonal pricing means consumer bills could be cut by £51billion over 15 years, according to the energy watchdog Ofgem.

In a speech in London today, Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho will also say building new gas power stations will maintain supply when the wind or sun does not power up renewables.

Ministers say they are committed to reaching Net Zero in a “sustainable, pragmatic way” that allows the UK not to rely on tyrants such as Vladimir Putin for gas supply.

Ms Coutinho will say: “It is clear to me that we have entered a new era.

“It’s an era in which energy can be weaponised against us.”
