‘Embarrassing’ say shoppers as high street fashion retailer with 150 stores to close branch for good

SHOPPERS have been left disappointed after a high street fashion retailer prepares to close one of its branches for good.

Yours Clothing, the plus-size clothing brand, has more than 150 shops across the UK.

It is owned by AK Retail, which recently acquired fashion brand Evans and ailing retailer M&Co.

But now, Yours is set to pull the shutters down on its branch in the Vicar Lane Shopping Centre in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, on February 10.

Shoppers have taken to social media to share their sadness over the decision, with some labelling it “embarrassing” for the town.

One Facebook user said: “Chesterfield is becoming a ghost town.

“It used to be a lovely bustling town.

“The restaurants and pubs are still, no wonder people do out of town shopping.

Another shopper said: “I like being able to go into a shop to try things on. I’m going to miss this one.’

A third added: “The only clothes shop I use in town. Ta for that. Very little reason to go now.”

The Sun has contacted Yours for comment.

A number of high street retailers have disappeared from Chesterfield in recent months.

Lloyds Pharmacy withdrew its services from hundreds of Sainsbury’s stores last year, including a branch in the town.

Plus, outdoor retailer Trespass closed its shop in the high street in November.

Huge signs advertising a closing down sale have appeared in shop windows with the tagline, “everything must go”.

Frankie and Benny’s also closed its restaurant in Chesterfield after the chain’s owner – The Restaurant Group – announced plans to close 23 branches.

Meanwhile, the Spa Lane Vaults Wetherspoons is at risk of closing after being put up for sale by the chain.

More high street closures

Retailers have been feeling the squeeze since the pandemic, while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to the soaring cost of living crisis.

High energy costs and a move to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll, and many high street shops have struggled to keep going.

The high street has seen a whole raft of closures over the past year and more are on their way.

Several major brands have also collapsed, such as Wilko and Paperchase.

Many retailers have been struggling to get by, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Energy costs have risen, and more shoppers than ever are choosing to order online rather than head into stores.

This has left some retailers grappling with budgets and have no choice but to close stores to cut costs.

British retailers saw the amount of goods they sold drop last month at its fastest rate in three years as under-pressure families shifted part of their Christmas shop to earlier in the year.

Sales volumes dipped by 3.2% in December, data from the Office for National Statistics suggests, down from a rise of 1.4% a month before.

Several big-name chains are pulling down the shutters for the final time this month.

Lidl will be pulling the shutters down on its site in Thornaby.

The bargain retailer has confirmed the sites in Stockton-on-Tees will shut on February 29.

Boots revealed it would be closing 300 stores over the next year as part of plans to evolve its brand.
