Elon Musk has raised eyebrows with a joke about smoking marijuana at Twitter’s next board meeting.
The 50-year-old billionaire – the richest man in the world with a fortune of over £200bn – was this week appointed a director of the social media platform after becoming its biggest shareholder with a 9.2 per cent stake.

No smoke without fire: Elon Musk took to Twitter to share a picture of him smoking what appears to be a joint, alongside the words: ‘Twitter’s next board meeting is gonna be lit.’
And yesterday he took to Twitter to share a picture of him smoking what appears to be a joint, alongside the words: ‘Twitter’s next board meeting is gonna be lit.’
The picture dates back to 2018 when Musk was under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the US regulator, for tweeting about his attempt to take his company Tesla private in a deal worth $420 a share.
The $420 a share price was a marijuana joke because April 20 – or 4/20 – is a popular holiday celebrating cannabis culture in the US.
Neil Wilson, chief market analyst at Markets.com in the City, said: ‘It’s all just a game to him. He loves it and he loves Twitter and more than anything he loves poking and provoking the SEC. It’s going to be fun watching.’
