A POPULAR discount supermarket with 1,000 branches is unexpectedly shutting the doors of one of the “very cheap” stores.

But don’t be disheartened yet – the chain has a good reason for closing down.

Aldi in Moreton has announced that it will be rolling down the shatters on March 29.

Fortunately, the retailer’s departure from the high street is temporary.

The supermarket is set to make a comeback in July after undergoing an exciting transformation.

A spokesperson for Aldi said: “In order to provide an improved shopping experience for Moreton customers, the Aldi store on Hoylake Road will close on 29th March to undergo an exciting refurbishment.

“As a result, we will be re-opening our new and improved Aldi store in July.”

The branch in Moreton has been well-received among locals with a star rating of 4.3 and over 1,000 reviews.

People have praised the shop for being well-stocked and offering reasonable prices.

One reviewer wrote: “Good prices for the produce, reasonable selection and good quality. Shelves are always full, if a bit disorganised at times.”

Another one added:”Great prices, and really good quality. The staff there are very friendly and helpful.”

Someone else pointed out: “Much Cheaper than the rest. Aldi need to have superstores now.”

One customer said: “Budget shop with quality items. I do all my weekly shopping here.”

While Moreton location halts operating until summer, 100 more stores are set to pop out around the country.

Aldi has revealed a list of 13 new locations in a major expansion plan as the supermarket chain has set its sights on running 1,500 UK stores.

The UK’s fourth largest supermarket is particularly keen on opening stores in and around London, where demand is high.

It is looking to open 100 new branches inside the M25, creating 3,500 new jobs, and today unveiled a list of 13 areas where it is looking to expand.

Aldi is scoping out sites big enough to house its 20,000square foot stores, which each need around 100 parking spaces.

The supermarket chain is also on the lookout for sites to accommodate Aldi Local stores, which are around 5,000square feet in size.

Aldi’s expansion comes at a time when a number of other retailers are looking to open branches across the UK.

Asda has been opening hundreds of convenience stores in recent months as it looks to rival major players Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

Primark is also opening new branches and investing and renovating more than a dozen of its existing shops.

WHSmith has turned its focus to the travel side of its business, with plans to open new sites in airports, railway stations and hospitals.

In an update to investors in January, the retailer said it was on track to open 15 stores this year, with a further 15 to follow “each year over the medium term”.

Lidl is also looking to open 12 new stores across the UK as it bids to raise £91million in funding from investors.

Wilko, which collapsed into administration last year, has also reappeared on the high street.

Moreton residents might be sad to learn that Aldi will be shut for Easter lunch or any holidays in the near future.

But other shoppers will be keen to know that the retailer’s branches are open over the Easter weekend.

Over the Easter weekend, Aldi stores in England and Wales will be open until 10pm on Good Friday and Easter Saturday.

As usual, its stores will be closed on Easter Sunday.

They’ll then reopen and welcome shoppers until 8pm on Easter Monday.

When’s the best time to shop at Aldi?

WHEN it comes to shopping at Aldi, the best time to do so depends on what you want to buy.

For reduced items – when shops open

Red sticker items are rare at Aldi’s 830 UK stores, but the supermarket says that none of its food goes to waste so there are some to be found – if you’re quick.

A spokesman for the supermarket said: “All items are reduced to 50 per cent of the recommend sales price before stores open on their best before or use by dates.”

That means you have the best chance of finding reduced food items if you go into stores as soon as it opens.

Opening times vary by shop but a majority open from 7am or 8am. You can find your nearest store’s times by using the supermarket’s online shop finder tool.

For Specialbuys – Thursdays and Sundays

Specialbuys are Aldi’s weekly collection of items that it doesn’t normally sell, which can range from pizza ovens to power tools.

New stock comes into stores every Thursday and Sunday, so naturally, these are the best days to visit for the best one-off special deals.

For an even better chance of bagging the best items, head there for your local store’s opening time.

You don’t have to head into stores to bag a Specialbuy, though.

They also go on sale online, usually at midnight on Thursday and Sunday, and you can pre-order them up to a week in advance.

As long as you spend at least £25, you’ll get the items delivered for free.

Remember: once they’re gone, they’re gone, so if there’s something you really want, visit as early as possible
