Britons used their payment cards more in August than at any time since the pandemic struck
Britons used their payment cards more over the August bank holiday weekend than at any point since Christmas 2019, according to new data.
The leisure, entertainment and hospitality sectors received the biggest boost, with the number of people heading out to high streets just 18.6 per cent lower than 2019 levels in August, making it the best month since the pandemic struck.
The figures suggest shopping bounced back last month after a dip in July as the pingdemic forced millions to stay at home.
Barclaycard, which processes £1 in every £3 spent on debit and credit cards in the UK, said transactions were up 14.4 per cent this bank holiday weekend than the same time last year and 9.4 per cent higher than in 2019.
Barclaycard Payments chief executive Rob Cameron said: ‘This is hopefully a sign of more positive times to come, and a testament to the strength and resilience of British businesses.’
