SAVE on food waste, save on cash: It’s a win-win.

Every year, households in the UK throw away £400 worth of food each — that comes to about £10billion in total.

So to celebrate national Stop Food Waste Day today, I have put together some tips on how to make your grub go further.

PORTION CONTROL: Freeze everything in portion sizes. Pop meat, mash and sauces in reusable freezer bags or tubs and then simply get out what you need to cook when you want it.

SWEET TREAT: Peaches, plums and other fruit that have been sitting in the bowl too long are generally great for desserts. Bake with butter and oats for a crumbly dessert. Add an egg and whisk before baking for a take on the new baked-porridge brekkie trend. Over-ripe bananas can be blended and frozen to make a banana ice-cream, which is also low in calories. Add peanut butter for even more flavour.

VEG OUT: Peelings can be baked and salted for snacks, while leftover salad items (spinach or lettuce leaves, say) can be blended with nuts and cheese to make a speedy pesto for pasta.

TAKEAWAY TAKE TWO: When I treat myself to an Indian takeaway, there is always a little sauce left in the tub. So I freeze it and then when I need a quick dinner on another day, I roast some veg or fry some meat, defrost the sauce and then throw it together in a pan. Bulking out with tinned beans or chickpeas (60p, Tesco) helps. And then just add a portion of rice (microwave rice is 35p at Lidl, or grab 1kg of easy-cook rice for 85p) for a yummy meal that feels like a real treat — and it costs mere pennies.

ONE STEP FURTHER: For more brilliant ideas like these, head to lovefoodhatewaste.com/recipes for some interesting leftover recipes. You could also try supercook.com, where you input your leftover ingredients and it will come up with recipes for those things in particular.
