Coupon Queen Holly Smith explains how you can save money on your shopping

From money saving apps that can bag you cheap food at Greggs to getting a free side at KFC, Holly shared her tips on how to get freebies from supermarkets, shops and chains.

The hacks will likely come in handy as families are facing up to a 37.2% hike to the cost of fridge staples, according to latest ONS figures.

And prices of clothes and eating out are going up too as a cost of living crisis bites.

But making the most of offers, apps and freebies can help you keep more cash in your pocket.

Use cashback apps

Holly explained how using apps can help you get free stuff at the supermarket when you’re doing your weekly shop.

Holly said apps like CheckOutSmart and Shopmium are worth downloading in order to get your money back on your shopping.

They work in a similar way by listing products sold in big supermarkets where you can get part of, or all of, your cash back when you buy them.

All you need to do is take a picture of your receipt, upload to the app and the cash will land in your account.

“You get loads of free stuff – you can get £30 worth of stuff for free each week easily,” she said.

The apps are free to download via Google Play or the App Store.

Free nappies at Aldi

You can get a 24 pack of Mamia size one newborn nappies from Aldi using Holly’s trick.

They usually cost 79p from the budget supermarket, but you can get the full-sized pack for FREE thanks to a Netmums trial.

To claim the pack you just have to fill out your details on Netmums’ free-sample form.

The only catch is that the Mamia newborn nappies are exclusively available at Aldi, so you won’t be able to pick them up anywhere else.

You have to venture into the store to pick them up too, as the freebie can’t be redeemed online.

“It’s a paper coupon, so they will send it through the post so when you go to do your grocery shopping at Aldi.

“Obviously you pick up the full sized pack of nappies[…] hand them [the cashier] the coupon and it’s done.”

Free sanitary towels

If you head to Always’ website, you’ll be able to get a pack of sanitary towels for free.

All you need to do is pick the free sample you want – there are four packs to choose from – and fill out an online form.

You can only order one sample per household, and the pack will arrive in 28 days.

“These type of samples come with free coupons with them – once you’ve tried the product and you’ve picked the one you like, you can go and get some money off them while you’re at the supermarket,” Holly said.

Money off at Greggs, Morrisons and more

Cashback apps aren’t the only ones that can get you money off your shopping.

Holly said the TooGoodToGo app can bag you food from restaurants and supermarkets like Greggs and Morrisons for much less.

Shoppers can buy leftover food from shops which would have only chucked the grub out anyway at rock bottom prices.

Some families have bought £40 worth of food for just a fiver from M&S using the app, so there’s big savings to be made.

“I do this with my local fish and chip shop,” Holly said.

“I went a couple of weeks ago and it cost me £3.50 – I got £40 worth of food for the entire family.”

Free side at KFC

Hungry families can bag free food at KFC if they download the chain’s app, Holly said.

“What you’ve got to do is download the KFC app, and as soon as you register, you’ll get a free side,” she said.

You can get a free drink, or a regular side like hot wings.

New customers who download the KFC app will automatically get given three stamps to exchange for a side or drink.

To get the freebie, you must download the app and register with your name, email address and postcode. You’ll then get sent an email to verify your account.

From there, you can start redeeming your freebie with your three stamps right away.

All you have to do is click on the “Free Side” button on the app when you’re in a KFC branch and this will generate a QR code to be scanned at the cashier.

Free £5 for clothes from H&M

If you’re wanting new clothes but don’t want to splash the cash, head to H&M.

At H&M stores, return clothes you no longer use and you’ll get 20 points and a digital Bonus Voucher giving you £5 off when spending £25 or more.

You need to be a member of H&M’s loyalty scheme to get the points but it’s free and you get other discounts too.

For every 100 points you collect, you unlock a £3 Bonus Voucher, so for every five items returned (earning 20 points for each), you get £3 vouchers in addition to the £5 one.

You can also build up points for money off through bringing in your own bag when shopping and when buying certain items labelled as “conscious”.

The more items you return for recyling, the more you’ll save.

You can take a look at H&Ms reward scheme here, including the points you can earn and how to join.

“It doesn’t matter the condition – if you have clothes with rips in, it doesn’t matter because they recycle them.

“Take a little bag, take [your clothes] in, hand it to them in store and they will give you a £5 voucher off a £25 spend.”
