Nearly one million pensioners missing out on extra cost of living payments

NEARLY a million pensioners on the lowest incomes are missing out on extra cost-of-living payments worth £650.

The first part has already started hitting bank accounts and is worth £326.

People getting Pension Credit are among those eligible for the cash.

But around 850,000 retirees are thought to be missing out on this benefit, which tops up the state pension.

But under little-known rules, a new Pension Credit claim can be backdated up to three months. This would then mean they are eligible for the cost-of-living cash. Phil

Agulnik, from benefits experts entitledto, said: “It’s not too late for some people to get both parts of the £650 payment, even if they don’t already claim Pension Credit.

“The rules say that anyone who was entitled to Pension Credit on the qualifying day of May 25 can get both parts of the cost-of-living payment as long as they apply before August 18 this year.”

If you became eligible for Pension Credit after May 25, or miss the deadline, you could still get the second payment. Eight million people will get £324 this winter on a date yet to be confirmed.

On top of the cost-of-living payment, Pension Credit payments can total £3,000 a year, depending on circumstances.
