THE price of eggs has gone up as much as 45 per cent since January in supermarkets.
Nearly 60 lines in the seven main stores rose by at least ten per cent.

The biggest hike was a large six-pack at Tesco, which is up 44.4 per cent since January to £2.60.
Supply shortages are blamed for cost rises — but they could be alleviated as producers begin to see bigger returns.
The Grocer reported the average price this month was 49.6 per cent up on a year ago.
The British Free Range Egg Producers Association said hen numbers were “gradually increasing”.
Robert Gooch, their CEO, said that the situation had “changed dramatically” at a farm level.
“The irony is that the price has gone far and beyond where it needed to go, with egg shortages [from hard-up producers reining back production] driving that price movement upwards,” he added.
“If supermarkets had just kept producers in business and covered feed costs last spring and summer, these prices would never have risen as high as they have.”
Tesco said this week that they will continue to have a limit of three egg boxes per customer.
