Care workers were added to the national Shortage Occupation list last year, and vacancy rates are almost twice the national average.

ONLY Fools and Horses actor Daniel Peacock has landed “the best job of my life” creating a programme of entertainment for residents at a care home in Hastings, East Sussex.

Daniel, who played singer Mickey Maguire in the TV sitcom and is also a director and scriptwriter, now uses his creativity to enrich the lives of people at Oakland Care’s Hastings Court with murder mystery nights, songwriting and even mock courts.

BEATING BLUES AT WORK

A survey by International Career Institute (ICI) has revealed the best ways to give staff a boost, so here’s how to find and create happiness at work.

1. Serving other people or your community: Care, nursing or working for a charity all help fulfil our need to give back to society.
2. A dog-friendly office: A third of all UK households own a pooch and two thirds of dog owners believe working alongside their pet boosts their mental health. The most dog-friendly sectors include software development, sales, marketing and recruitment.
3. Upskilling paid for by your company: Three in five firms funded training for their employees last year and investing in your people pays off. The ICI study shows 58 per cent of workers would stay in a job with this perk.
4. Flexible hours: 70 per cent of people are looking for greater flexibility in their working hours. Any employee with more than 26 weeks service has a legal right to ask for flexi work.
5. Remote working: The number of people working remotely has tripled since the pandemic. Top jobs for WFH include digital marketing, customer service, data analysis and translator roles.
