The new McDonald’s Squishmallow toys are already causing controversy

The fast food giant added the popular Halloween-themed Squishmallow to the toy meal deal last week.

However, parents and children are already being left disappointed as they are opening up their Happy Meal only to discover old toys rather than a spooky squishy one.

Customers have complained they have been given Smurfs, Pokemon cards, and books with the £3.49 meal deal rather than the popular plushies.

But it does appear that some people have been able to get hold of the new Happy Meal toys and are trying to cash in on their luck.

A set of six has been listed on eBay for £1,000 and there is also a set of four listed at the moment for £99.99.

A single Halloween Squishmallow toy is also listed on the bidding site for £50.

Furious parents have been taking to social media to vent their disappointment at not being able to get hold of the toys.

One mum said her 6-year-old daughter was left “utterly devastated” after receiving a Smurf toy from last year rather than a Squishmallow.

Another said: “Pretty upset little boy, no Squishmallow in his Happy Meal, pretty poor considering the huge promotion you have put into this.”

Squishmallows were first launched in 2017 and quickly proved to be a hit with over 10million sold last year alone.

Small versions of the toy can usually retail for around £8 and larger ones for £25, although this can depend on the particular design.

The toy comes in six designs and is supposed to be available in Happy Meals until October 31.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “We know how popular Squishmallows are with our family customers and how much excitement they generate.

“We take order accuracy very seriously and apologise sincerely for any disappointment caused in the instances where different Happy Meal toys have been provided in error.”

The Squishmallow toys are being promoted in a TV advert saying: “This Halloween things are getting spooky, with McDonald’s Happy Meal Squishmallows.

“They’re spooky on the outside, but squishy on the inside.

“Join the adventure with Squishmallows in Happy Meals, along with delicious apple slices and grapes.

“Some fun, some food it’s all inside this Happy Meal.”

The meals are a favourite among kids and are priced at £3.49 but this can vary depending on where you are in the country.

As well as the toy, it comes with the option of fish fingers, chicken nuggets, or veggie dippers, plus either an apple and grapefruit bag or carrot bag.

Drink options include water, milk or a Fruit Shoot.

Customers are limited to one additional toy per transaction, which can be bought alongside the Happy Meal, which should already include a toy.
