A BASKET of groceries is a penny cheaper at Aldi than its rival Lidl, according to a report.
But both discount chains were more than £10 cheaper than the major supermarkets for a shop of 33 everyday staples, the research published yesterday also showed.
Trade magazine The Grocer, which carries out weekly price checks, said: “Aldi edged out Lidl by just 1p in the most hotly contested battle between the discounters to date.
“At £55.43 for 33 staples, Aldi came out on top in this week’s shop — having lost out to its rival in the last head-to-head survey.
“In May, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s were reasonably competitive versus Aldi and Lidl.
“But this time they were all well off the discounters’ pace.”
Asda was £10.13 more expensive than Aldi, and Tesco was £11.09 dearer.
Morrisons came in £12.19 more expensive, while Sainsbury’s was £13.59 dearer.
And Waitrose was by far the most expensive of the pack, coming in £20 more than Aldi.
