KEEPING clean and looking good doesn’t have to make a mess of your finances.

It’s National Hygiene Week, launched by The Hygiene Bank, which helps collect and distribute toiletries and make-up to those struggling to make ends meet.

The average spend on essentials is £12.40 per month, per person, which adds up when you have a big family. But there are ways to make a tidy saving . . .

FREEBIES WEBSITES: There is a dedicated beauty section on magicfreebies.co.uk. Currently, you can nab a free hand cream and exfoliator but you have to be fast. The website also has regularly posts about essentials. Latestfreestuff.co.uk is another great option and check out our Facebook page (facebook.com/ thesunsavers).

TOP BRAND SAMPLES: Buy multi-use products as it can be cheaper. I like shampoo and body bars like Faith In Nature Lavender & Geranium bar, £5.79 at Holland & Barrett, as it lasts for a few months. When ordering from lookfantastic.com or cultbeauty.co.uk, at the checkout, they often have an option to add free samples. At supermarkets, look out for kiosks handing out samples and if you are at a beauty counter, a friendly chat can mean a potential free sample.

SHARING APPS: The food-sharing app Olio partners with restaurants and allows you to pick up items for a low price. But they also have a sharing function that allows people to post items such as toiletries they haven’t used and offer them to someone who needs them. Head to olioex.com or get the app.

BEAUTY CLUBS: Some mags and stores have reader panels, which test products. Boots is looking to add to its reader panel. Sign up at bootsvolunteers.com.

IF YOU DO NEED A CLEAR-OUT: Donate unused products to The Hygiene Bank and check for donation points or community collectors in your area. It also needs volunteers so head to thehygienebank.com. Or donate unused products at Boots stores.

  • PRICES correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability.
