The AI chatbot ChatGPT is the fastest-growing application in the history of the internet with an estimated 13 million daily users – but can YOU match ChatGPT’s riddle-solving powers?
We set ChatGPT a series of (fairly tricky) riddles and it effortlessly solved them – well, most of them.
In two cases, the popular bot either got it wrong, or actually ground to a halt mid-answer with a flashing cursor stopping mid-sentence.
We used no prompt other than writing the riddle into the text box – so if you want to test ChatGPT’s ability to solve riddles, that’s how to do it.

ChatGPT isn’t yet perfect at solving puzzles, and can deliver mixed results on everything from cryptographic puzzles to crosswords, says AI expert Rijul Gupta, Chief Executive Officer at Deepmedia AI.
Gupta says, ‘The hype around ChapGPT is mixed, with some claiming it’s “scary dangerous” while others deem it extremely useful.
‘When it comes to solving riddles? It’s no enigmatologist (puzzle expert).’’
It is not surprising that ChatGPT fails to solve some riddles, Gupta says.
Gupta says, ‘Getting it to create a crossword puzzle can have varying results. The thing about ChatGPT – and AI chatbots in general – is that it can be confidently wrong in a way that sounds super convincing if you don’t know the actual answer yourself.
‘We’ve seen a slew of examples online where it simply failed to solve an encryption puzzle.
‘So, while ChatGPT is good for a lot of things, solving riddles/puzzles is just something it can do perfectly – yet.’
According to analytics firm SimilarWeb, ChatGPT averaged 13 million users per day in January, making it the fastest-growing internet app of all time.
It took TikTok about nine months after its global launch to reach 100 million users, and Instagram more than two years.
OpenAI, a private company backed by Microsoft Corp, made ChatGPT available to the public for free in late November.
