Campaign group Fair Fuel — backed by The Sun’s Keep It Down drive — slammed the “greedy rip-off prices”.

It found that petrol in the UK cost on average £1.45 a litre on Christmas Eve — which was 27p higher than in Austria, 21p more than in Spain and 14p more than in Germany.

Meanwhile, a litre of diesel went for £1.49 in UK garages. This was 18p higher than in France, 22p higher than in Germany and 13p more than Italians pay.

Fair Fuel head Howard Cox said it means Brits face some of the highest fuel prices in the developed world, with families being hit twice — once by the rocketing price and again by the tax slapped on it.

He said falls in wholesale fuel price were not being passed on to drivers. Mr Fox added: “The huge amount of VAT being generated by the eye-watering pump prices is great for the Treasury, but these greedy rip-off prices are crippling low-income families, small business and are accelerating the rise in inflation.”
