Brewers including Heineken are turning to stocks on the continent, where most bars are shut, with supplies to be trucked into the UK.

More than 10 million drinkers have visited pubs in England since they reopened outdoor spaces on April 12.

Heineken told landlords it was sourcing “additional stock from our European network”.

The letter, obtained by The Sun on Sunday, said: “We are reviewing all possible options to meet this ongoing demand.

“Some of these measures take time to flow through but we are fully focused on delivering them.

“This industry wide challenge is one we are all working hard to overcome, and we will continue to communicate regularly to keep you informed of the situation as it improves.”

Heineken admitted the huge surge had “totally surpassed our most optimistic forecasts”.

It comes despite just 40 per cent of England’s pubs being open at the moment.
