Eager fans of the discount retailer spotted the sale at one store that is shutting its doors for good this week.

B&M had previously announced its Bishop Auckland branch will shut on May 5.

News of the closing down sale has been shared across social media with shoppers itching to get their hands on some bargains.

One woman who had headed down to the store shared a photo of her huge selection of finds, including multiple filled shopping bags.

She said: “Absolutely unreal… not much left now.”

Fellow shoppers wrote “it’ll be like Tesco on Christmas Eve”, while another tagged a pal and said “get me some bargains please”.

Several bargain hunters said that the queue was “way down the street” so if you live nearby you might want to be quick.

While we couldn’t find exact examples of the discount deals people managed to find, in the past B&M shoppers have picked up items for as little as 10p.

In a statement posted to its website, the chain said: “Unfortunately your B&M Bishop Auckland store at 4 Saddler Street will close on Friday 5th May 2023.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused as a result of this closure.”

Unlike other closures in the past the store will not be relocating to another nearby location, although there are several nearby shops including Shildon and Ferryhill.

It’s not the first time that B&M has hosted the major discounts before closing down stores.

When its Newport shop closed in Wales back in February, it hosted a huge 75% off sale before departing.

There were similar discounts at a B&M store located in Rugby’s Clock Towers Shopping Centre when it closed in 2021.

And before that shoppers from Slough benefitted from a similar price cut frenzy as a separate closing down sale took affect at a B&M store in the area.

The Bishop Auckland closure comes following several shops shutting and relocating this year:

  • Castlegate Shopping Centre, Stockton – Feb 25
  • Maesglas Retail Park, Newport, Wales – March 4
  • Boucher Road, Belfast – March 26
  • Queens Drive Retail Park, Kilmarnock – March 26
  • Broadwalk Shopping Centre, Bristol – March 29
  • Burnden Retail Park store in Bolton – May 24

It’s not all bad news though because the discount chain is set to open multiple shops this year, as well as fresh relocations.

There are five cutting the ribbon this month:

  • Armagh (expansion) – Friday, May 5 – re-launch
  • Widnes (relocation) – Bowers Retail Park closing Wednesday, May 17,  Widnes Trade Park opening Wednesday, May 24
  • Fforestfach (Swansea) – Friday, May 26
  • Jarrow (major refit) – Saturday, May 27 – re-launch
  • Fazakerley – Wednesday, May 31

How can I save money at B&M?

While a closing down sale offers big discounts on already bargain prices, there are still ways to save at B&M every other day too.

The B&M barcode scanner app allows you to discover discounted items before the staff have even reduced them.

The scanner is located on the B&M Stores mobile app, which can be downloaded for free on your smartphone.

Shoppers can download it on the App Store or Google Play.

Once you’ve got the app, click on the “scan” button at the bottom of your homepage.

This will then bring up the camera on your smartphone, which you’ll need to use to scan barcodes.

When you’ve found a product you want to scan, simply point your smartphone camera toward its barcode.

The app will then automatically bring up the item’s price – this is when you’ll know if it is reduced or not.

Bargain hunters say some items come up as £1, 50p or even 10p through the app.

Shoppers should also keep an eye out for products with a white reduction sticker on.

This means they will have a certain amount slashed off the price shown on the label.

Shop for products at the end of the season – we’ve seen shoppers make huge savings this way.

Meanwhile, B&M shoppers have found garden must-haves for up to £50 less than the original price.

Plus, here are six things you should always buy at B&M and those you could leave on the shelf.
