That means it’s even more important to plan your lunches ahead to save cash. . .

SARNIE SURPRISE: Sandwiches can still be on the menu but bulk-buy packets of ham and cheese, make up enough for a couple of weeks’ worth then freeze.

The frozen sarnies will stay fresh and thaw by lunchtime, so they’re perfect for busy mornings.

PERFECT PASTA: Even pasta is going up in price but it’s still a great filler for family lunches.

A bag of Asda fusilli, 95p, and a jar of tomato pasta sauce (49p, Lidl) can stretch to at least four main lunches.

COOL QUESADILLAS: Buy an eight-pack of Aldi tortilla wraps then lie them flat in a hot pan, one at a time.

Add cheese and veggies to half the wrap, fold it over then flip it and fry to make tasty quesadillas.

Experiment with any leftover veggies and meat — it’s a great way to use them up and avoid waste. Plus, you can enjoy them hot or cold.

SOUP SAVER: Soup is one of the easiest ways to use up leftovers. Take all the remains from a roast dinner and boil with stock in one pot then blend.

Pop into freezer bags and take one out every morning. Leek-and-potato is another great cheap soup option, with easy recipes posted online for free at bbcgoodfood.com.

RICE IDEA: Mexican rice bowls are a tasty, quick lunch option and they are cheap to fill.

Thaw a pack of frozen chicken breast or thighs and fry with herbs and spices in a pan then add some veggies.

Cook up a large portion of rice then portion into tubs.

Add extra veg with cheap tinned black beans or sweetcorn.
