The switch has already started in some parts of the country and is due to finish later this month.

But it could mess up any series links you have set up on Freesat or Sky.

According to RXTV, several people in regions already converted over complained about problems with their recordings.

So check what you have set on Freesat channel 106, as that’ll be closing down.

For Sky Q and Sky+HD, make sure recordings are now set for channel 101 instead of channel 115 before it too closes.

Big HD switch

The BBC is switching the main BBC One channel to HD so you will finally get local news in HD.

For most people the process will be seamless but anyone with an old SD-only set-top box could lose access to BBC One.

If you’re affected, you’ll have to buy a brand new set-top box.

By early 2024, the broadcaster will stop all SD broadcasts via satellite, so anyone affected will need to upgrade their set-top box now.

You might be eligible for help with the process, including a voucher or a home installation visit.

Assistance will be given depending on your “household and lifestyle”.

“We are providing some assistance for elderly audiences or those in need of extra support,” the official switch site says.

“However, depending on demand, the quickest way to get yourself ready for the switchover will be to buy your own HD TV Box from one of the high-street retailers above.”

You’ll have to register at hdsatelliteupgrade.co.uk.

How to tell if you’re using an SD-only box

If you’re unsure whether you’re affected, there is a special channel that allows you to check.

Freesat customers can go to channel 799 on your TV.

If your set-top box is fine, it’ll show a “Good news!’ message.

But if it says “Sorry, your satellite set-top box is not capable of receiving high definition services” then you’ll need to get a replacement to continue receiving BBC channels in future.

Old Sky SD-only devices can check by going to channel 105.

If you see “Channel 5 HD” then you’re fine, but if it’s just “Channel 5” then you can only receive SD channels.
