ASDA shoppers are rushing to pick up cat food scanning for only 73p a can – but there’s a catch.

The price of cat and dog food has rocketed by nearly 60 per cent in the past 12 months.

Pet owners are now looking to feed their moggie on a budget and find deals where they can.

RSPCA research shows almost a quarter of owners are worried about how they will continue to feed their pets.

One shopper found Go Local Ruby adult cat food discounted to 73p a can, but there is only one flavour.

That flavour is chicken – in the 400g size. That normally sells for 85p a tin, but has been reduced at Asda.

The shopper took to Facebook to share the find.

She said: “I took all of them from my local, paydays a few days away and so my Binx has been eating the tin on the left, which is actually 15p more than the Sheba.

“He now requests to be ‘Sir Binx’.”

Other shoppers said that the poster had found a bargain.

It’s not the first time shoppers have found discounted pet food at the retail giant.

One woman was trolled last year after clearing an entire shelf of cat food.

The woman found boxes of Tiger Indoor biscuits for 45p each and bought 46 separate boxes of them.

The cost of living crisis saw cat and dog food hit hard by increases in the price.

Analysis revealed that some food prices in high street stores and discounters increased by almost 58 per cent last year

Nestlé’s Go-Cat Adult Chicken & Duck 750g, for instance, has gone from £2 to £3.15 in Asda — up 57.5 per cent.

At the same retailer, Pedigree’s mixed multipack of wet dog food tins (6x400g) from Mars Petcare has shot up 55.6 per cent, from £4.50 to £7.

In Tesco, Pedigree Adult Dry Dog Food Chicken & Vegetable 3kg is up from £7 to £8.75 — a 25 per cent increase in the year to July 3.

I tested supermarket cat food against top brands and my moggie couldn’t tell the difference

Complete & Balanced Nutrition, Tesco Pouches (12 x 100g) £2.99 and dry food (2kg) £3.35

THESE pouches smell meaty in a nice way – not the classic overpowering processed aroma you get with most wet cat food.

It is a strong enough smell for Wiggins to appear from nowhere and he starts clawing my neck.

Each of the chunks of meat in the jelly are perfectly oval and separate easily from the jelly. It is a hit all round.

The dry food is the best value for money but barely smells, which worries me a little.

But that doesn’t seem to bother Wiggins, who happily wolfs them down.

It is a hit – and a bargain price.
