British families are preparing for smaller Christmas gatherings but starting early to lift the gloom, says Asda.

The supermarket said sales of frozen turkey crowns, which serve three or four people, are up 230 per cent on last year.

And sales of Christmas trees, lights and puddings are already booming. Its revenues in the third quarter from June to September rose 2.7 per cent, excluding fuel, down from 3.8 per cent growth for the previous quarter.

Online sales rose 72 per cent year-on-year and it has nearly doubled its deliveries since the pandemic struck.

It defended its £1.9billion of business rates relief, saying it incurred ‘significant costs’ paying staff to self-isolate and fitting out stores with social distancing measures.
