THE majority of retailers have confirmed the days people will be able to shop in their stores this week.

Most shops and supermarkets will be closed for certain days in order to give staff some much-needed time off.

Almost all stores across the UK are shut on Christmas Day, but there are also a handful of retailers that won’t open on Boxing Day either.

Christmas Day falls on a Sunday in 2022, which means there’s an extra bank holiday on the following Tuesday, December 27.

This is as well as the usual Boxing Day bank holiday on Monday, December 26.

There will also be an added bank holiday on January 2, 2023 due to New Year’s Day falling on a Sunday.

This means customers will need to plan their shopping trips carefully from Boxing Day to New Year’s Day.

Opening hours can vary from branch to branch, so check your local store times before you make the trip.

Most big retailers will have their opening times listed on their websites.

Tesco

All Tesco supermarkets will be closed on Christmas Day this year as staff relax for the festive celebrations.

Larger stores will be shutting up shop earlier on Christmas Eve at 6pm, with Express stores staying open until 10pm.

On Boxing Day, Tesco Extras and superstores are open 9am to 6pm.

Most Express shops will close at 7pm and some larger ones will close at 6pm.

The following day (Tuesday, December 27), Extras and superstores will open at 8am and close at 8pm.

The majority of Express stores are open for normal trading hours, with 24-hour stores opening at 6am.

Selected larger Express stores will open shorter hours, from 8am to 6pm.

Tesco opening hours over the festive period vary from store to store and by location, so it is advising customers to find their local store opening times on its website.

This is also the best place to check for petrol filling station opening times, as these can vary from the main store opening hours.

Asda

The following opening times apply to most Asda stores over the Christmas and New Year period.

Stores will be shut on Christmas Day, and on Boxing Day, they’ll be open from 9am to 6pm.

Then on Tuesday, December 27 from 8am to 8pm.

From Wednesday 28 to Thursday 29, normal opening hours will resume.

Times may vary at some stores, you can check individual store opening times by using the Asda store locator.

Aldi

Aldi stores are closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day as they usually are during the Christmas period.

The discount supermarket’s opening hours vary depending on where you live.

The majority of stores will be open from 8am until 8pm between Christmas and New Year, and until 6pm on New Year’s Eve.

Shops will also be closed on New Year’s Day.

Stores will also be open until 8pm on Bank Holiday Monday, January 2, 2023.

Customers are urged to check their nearest store to double-check its opening hours.

Lidl

Outlined below are Lidl’s broad opening hours for the festive season.

But, these times may vary by location, so the supermarket is encouraging customers to look at its store finder to double-check.

Stores will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and on New Year’s Day.

On December 27, most Lidl shops will be open from 8am to 10pm.

Co-op

On Christmas Eve, Co-op stores will be open until 9pm before closing on Christmas Day.

Then on Boxing Day, stores will open between 8am and 8pm.

The chain recommends checking your local shop’s opening hours before you head out the door though as some store’s will have varying hours.

Morrisons

Morrisons supermarkets will be shut on December 25.

Unlike some retailers, the chain will then be open on Boxing Day.

Shoppers will then be able to browse on December 26 from 9am to 6pm.

The usual opening hours for your nearest store will then resume until New Year’s Eve.

Times may vary at some stores, you can check individual store opening times by using the Morrisons store locator.

Iceland

Iceland staff will have Christmas Day and Boxing day off this year so they have a chance to enjoy the festivities.

On December 27 opening hours will vary, but many branches will be open from around 8am.

Most will then close between 8pm and 10pm.

Sainsbury’s

All Sainsbury’s supermarkets will be closed on Christmas Day.

The majority will then be open on Boxing Day between 10am and 5pm.

On December 27, most are open from 8am to 8pm, but opening hours will vary by store, so it is best to check the store locator on the website.

Opening hours can vary though, so Sainsbury’s advises customers to check the website for the latest details for their area.

Other retailers

B&M

All B&M stores are closed on Christmas Day and on New Year’s Day.

The majority of shops will be open from 8am to 6pm on Boxing Day.

Some shops will then be open between 8am and 9pm for the rest of the following week, but some will close earlier at 6pm.

Next

Primark

Primark will be closed on Christmas Day to give staff a well deserved break.

Stores will be open daily from Boxing Day, including New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

As opening times vary by store, the chain advises shoppers to check local store times on the website before visiting to avoid disappointment.

Poundland

For the third year in a row, Poundland will close all stores on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The move is intended to give colleagues a well-deserved break.

Stores will then reopen on December 27.

Customers can check their local store opening times over the Christmas period on the Poundland website.

Marks and Spencer

All M&S stores will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

As a general time, stores will then be open on December 27 and 28 from 9am until 8pm.

Of course, store hours will vary across the country so do check with your local branch before visiting.

Home Bargains

Home Bargains is shutting up shop on Christmas and Boxing Day to give staff time off over Christmas.

Stores will then reopen on December 27.

John Lewis and Waitrose

The John Lewis partnership has said that all stores will be closed on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

This includes all Waitrose stores as well.

However, a few smaller Waitrose stores at petrol stations may still be open.

Despite being closed on December 26, John Lewis is holding a “Boxing Day” sale.

Price cuts will begin online from 5pm on December 24, with sales in stores starting when they open after the Christmas break on December 27.

The majority of John Lewis stores will be open between 9am and 6pm between the Christmas and New Year period.

B&Q

All B&Q stores are shut on Christmas Day as staff celebrate the festive period.

Stores will be open in the week running up to Christmas Day, but they close earlier on Christmas Eve at 4pm.

Along with many other big stores, B&Q has chosen to close its 308 shops in the UK on Boxing Day.

The retailer will then reopen on December 27.

IKEA

All Ikea stores will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The majority will then be open at varying times on Boxing Day – the retailer is urging shoppers to check before visiting.

All stores will then be open as usual between December 27 and December 30.

Homebase

Homebase stores will be closed on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day over the yuletide season.

This is to give staff time to celebrate the festive period at home with their families and friends.

Most stores will be open on Christmas Eve, but with reduced hours, and will close at 4pm.

On Tuesday, December 27 – which is a bank holiday – the store will be opening its doors at 9am and staying open until 6pm.

ScrewFix

Screwfix is open on Christmas Eve, but closes earlier at 4pm.

Stores are not open on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but will reopen to customers on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at 7am.

Due to the day being a bank holiday, Screwfix will operate reduced opening hours, closing at 6pm.

Wilko

On Boxing Day Wilko stores will be open from 10am to 4pm but are closed on December 25.

Then on December 27 the shops will be opening at 9am and closing at 5pm.

On December 28, 29, 30, Wilko will resume its usual opening hours, you can check your local on the website.

Boots

All Boots stores will be closed on Christmas Day.

The majority of stores will then reopen at 10am on Boxing Day and close at 5pm.

Wickes

In an unusual move, Wickes will be shut for three separate days over the Christmas period.

Unlike many other stores, Wickes will be closed on Saturday, December 24.
