Rumors regarding Apple’s premium VR headset are making their way around the web, with the latest revealing the system could cost as much as $3,000.

The latest details come from The Information that the device’s design comes with a swappable Apple Watch-style band and include mesh fabric similar to that used in a HomePod.

The VR headset will boast ultra-high-resolution 8K displays and advanced eye-tracking technology, along with dozens of cameras for both VR and mixed reality applications.

News that Apple is getting in to the VR space surfaced last year with Bloomberg releasing a report saying the firm was working on two distinct AR and VR devices – but at the time both were ‘still years away from being released.’

But it seems Apple is ramping up developing on its VR headset, which could now launch in 2022.

The latest report provides more details of the technology and hardware that could make their way into the headset.

Apple has been reportedly developing sophisticated eye-tracking and hand-tracking technologies, along with a dial mounted on the side of the device and ‘thimble-like accessory.’

The eye-tracking would only display images in the user’s peripheral vision, which reduces the amount of power needed by the computer, people with knowledge of the project told The Information.

However, the $3,000 price tag may not be so popular among users – Apple recently launched its AirPods Max over-ear headphones for $549 that sparked fury among consumers.

In addition, Oculus and HTC sell there VR headsets anywhere from $1,000 to $1,599.

The Information’s details seem to line-up with a report from Bloomberg released last month, specifically that it would come with a big price tag.

The VR headsets were said to include a fabric design for a light-weight feel, along with a cooling fan, which is a feature Apple has tried to avoid with previous products.

Last June, Bloomberg released a report saying the firm was working on two distinct augmented reality and virtual reality devices.

The devices, according to the report, are codenamed N421, which is said to be a lightweight pair of augmented reality glasses that can overlay text and images on a screen, and N301, which is a bulkier and more powerful headset that blends augmented reality and virtual reality.

The January reports again cites both, noting the VR set is in a late prototype stage and the AR glasses are in the early in early stage known as ‘architecture,’ meaning Apple is still working on underlying technologies.
