APPLE has had to pay millions of dollars to a woman whose explicit videos and images were shared online by people repairing her iPhone.

The private content was uploaded to her Facebook and other platforms and appeared as if she’d uploaded it herself.

Apple was not named in the lawsuit but has since confirmed the incident and made an apology.

The tech giant said in a statement: “We take the privacy and security of our customers’ data extremely seriously and have a number of protocols in place to ensure data is protected throughout the repair process.”

It added: “When we learned of this egregious violation of our policies at one of our vendors in 2016, we took immediate action and have since continued to strengthen our vendor protocols.”

The Telegraph first reported on the incident that happened five years ago.

The victim was studying at the University of Oregon at the time.

She sent her iPhone to be fixed by Apple contractors at Pegatron Technology Service.

Once the incident was reported, Apple investigated and fired the two technicians involved.

The company reportedly asked for confidentiality and its role was only revealed when Pegatron and its insurers got into a legal dispute over the compensation paid.

There are around 20 US states which want a Right to Repair legislation.

That would force Apple to make tools and components avaliable so third parties can also fix iPhones.
