APPLE has finally confirmed the release date for its new exercise app that promises to turn you from couch potato to fitness fanatic.
Called Fitness+, the service provides personalised workouts beamed to your eyes and ears through your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Apple TV.
What is Fitness+?
Fitness+ is a new service unveiled by Apple in September during a virtual event recorded at its headquarters in California.
Out this month, the app charges users a monthly fee for personalised workout routines and detailed health tracking.
Apple says it offers “world-class workouts by the world’s top trainers.”
Health tracking is achieved using data from Apple Watch and the Apple health app.
Fitness+ price and release date
On Tuesday, Apple hosted a surprise virtual event during which it revealed that Fitness+ will launch on December 14.
It costs £9.99 / $9.99 a month or £79.99 / $79.99 for a year’s subscription.
Those who already own an Apple Watch will get a month free of the service to try it out, Apple said.
Apple Fitness+ is included for three months when you buy a new Apple Watch.
How does Fitness+ work?
Fitness+ is powered by the Apple Watch, so if you don’t have one, it appears you’re out of luck.
The service builds you a personalised fitness routine based on data collected by your watch, as well as apps like Apple Health.
Fitness+ crunches the data and then delivers virtual workouts to you via your iPhone, iPad or Apple TV.
It features 10 workout categories, including yoga, cycling, dance, treadmill walk, treadmill run, strength, core, HIIT, rowing and mindful cool downs.
New workouts are added every week, according to Apple, and as they’re delivered to your handheld devices, you can exercise almost anywhere.
Apple Watches have had fitness tracking tools for years, but Fitness+ is a new way to apply them, according to Apple.

“Your Apple Watch is equipped with sensors that, combined with advanced algorithms, give you all the metrics you need to track your workout,” the firm writes on its website.
“With the creation of Apple Fitness+, that information is now transported to your iPhone, iPad or Apple TV in real time to keep you motivated and engaged.”
Those metrics include heart rate, calories burnt, pace and distance, which will automatically be beamed from your watch to the larger screen.
All of your data and personalised workouts will be available through a new Apple app called Fitness.
The software uses artificial intelligence to recommend workouts based on the things you typically do with the Workout app on Apple Watch.
Fitness+ will even suggest new trainers and workouts to help you build a better routine, throwing in stuff you’re not so practised at.
In other news, Android users are being warned not to download a specific phone background as it could crash their device.
Apple’s next AirPods could track your heart rate – using light sensors in your ears.
And, 3D designers have mocked up what the iPhone 12 could look like.
