Despite his success at the time, Hopkins reportedly thought about quitting acting in TV and movies in the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to Biography. Hopkins was actually considering going back to his theater job. He received the role of Hannibal Lecter in the film Silence of the Lambs at that time.

Based on the same-titled 1988 novel, the 1991 motion picture. Jodie Foster plays Clarice Starling, an FBI agent entrusted with speaking with Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter in the series.

Lecter is a cannibal and serial murderer who is incarcerated. In order to solve a case involving another serial murderer who is on the run, the FBI needs to acquire his opinions. Foster’s heroine utilizes Lecter’s observations to track down her adversary as she delves deeper into the deranged mind of Hopkin’s villain.

Hopkins later won the Oscar for best actor for his performance as Lecter. This despite having very little screen time. Hopkins only spent a total of 16 minutes in Silence of the Lambs, according to Looper.

Looper notes, “But every second he’s on-screen is simply electrifying,” and won the Academy Award that year over luminaries like Robin Williams. Hopkins only appears in the movie for 14% of the time, yet every heart-stopping, spine-chilling second is worth its weight in Oscar gold.

Hopkins has performed the part multiple times, appearing as same person in  Red Dragon from 2002 and Hannibal from 2001.
