AMERICANS will have a slightly different version of the iPhone 14 compared to the rest of the world when it’s released this week.

While things will look and run exactly the same across all four models of the new smartphone, Americans will get a special exclusive under the hood.

eSIM version of the iPhone 14 will only be available in the US

In the US only, the iPhone 14 line-up will go SIM-less.

Apple is scrapping the need for a physical SIM card, in favour of modern eSIMs.

eSIM does everything electronically, meaning you no longer have to fiddle about with SIM cards when changing network provider.

But for Brits and everyone else in the world, we’re keeping the SIM card slot for now.

For eSIMs to work the network carrier needs to support it, of course, and thankfully for Americans the major ones do.

Apple actually began adopting eSIM back in 2018, allowing people to use two SIMs at once.

It means customers can essentially download a SIM from their provider.

According to The Verge, the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro can store at least eight eSIMs, with up to two active at once.

This is particularly handy for frequent travellers.

In the US, big brands like Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile support eSIM.

Meanwhile, across the pond, EE, O2 and Vodafone allow it.

It’s not clear why Apple has chosen to only launch support in the US.

But it does give a sense of the direction the company is heading towards.

Apple is launching four new iPhone models this year, including the the iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Plus, the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

They’re the first iPhones in years to drop the notch at the top of the display, instead featuring a pill-shaped cutout.

With four new models on offer, the iPhone 14 is now the entry-level option.

The iPhone 14 Plus is much the same but with a larger display, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max features all the bells and whistles.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro come with 6.1-inch displays but the Plus and Pro Max models are upped to 6.7-inches.

There are five colours to choose from, including Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple, and Red.

Apple has kept last year’s A15 chip to power the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, while the Pro range is upgraded to a mightier new A16 chip.

Apple has also upgraded its cameras, claiming that the iPhone 14 can achieve better results in challenging lighting environments, offering 49 per cent better low-light image capture.

There’s a larger sensor and faster focus, with an f/1.5 aperture.

According to Apple, it’s now possible to capture night-mode photographs much quicker.

And the selfie camera is also improved with a faster aperture, offering a 39 per cent boost to low-light selfies.

There are some new safety features too, like car crash detection that can automatically notify the emergency services if you’re in danger.

Apple has also added a new emergency feature to get help even when you’re off the grid in a remote location.

The new Emergency SOS lets you connect to a satellite, sharing your location with emergency services.

All versions of the iPhone 14 will be released on September 16, except the iPhone 14 Plus, which is out on October 7.
