Alfie Moon’s Ford Capri to be sold at auction for £15k

Fans of long-running TV soaps and collectors of Fast Fords might feel the urge to dig out their chequebooks as one of the most iconic four-wheeled EastEnders regulars is set to go under the hammer in a couple of months.

The 1982 Ford Capri owned by Queen Vic landlord Alfie Moon in the television show is being sold at auction in September, with its registration document showing the BBC as a previous owner.

The black 2.8 Injection version of Ford’s long-running coupe is expected to change hands for a figure in the region on £12,000 and £15,000.

The car’s availability is perfect timing with the BBC recently announcing that Shane Richie will be making a return to Albert Square as Alfie this autumn.

The motor is the second of two Capris the character owned, with this example first making an on-screen appearance in 2010 and was regularly featured in the show until 2016.

Classic Car Auctions, which is selling the vehicle on behalf of the vendor at its event in Warwickshire on Sunday 24 September, describes it as ‘one of the best known and loved TV car characters in its own right’.  

Richard Greenhalgh of Classic Car Auctions who consigned the car, says: ‘This 1982 Ford Capri 2.8 Injection is an early and rare four-speed combination, showing 62,300 miles. 

‘Its MOT history online goes back to 2006 but mileage unwarranted. It comes with a large history file. 

‘The car was purchased by our vendor in 2018 with its early 4-speed gearbox, polished alloys, grey check interior, Jan Speed exhaust. 

‘It has been four years in its current ownership. MOT until July 2023 issued with no advisories.’

During filming, the motor displayed Alfie’ personalised registration ‘AI5 ALF’, though that was not its genuine number plate – which is ‘N0J 234X’.

In the notes provided by the previous vendor, they state that the car has proof of its former use by the broadcasting company.

They state: ‘The vehicle was owned by the BBC and I have a colour photocopy of the old V5 which shows the BBC as the owners – I think it’s a nice bit of provenance for the car. 

‘I also have pictures of it parked outside the Queen Vic Pub.’

The car remains mostly original, though the sales pitch does confirm it has been repainted and had a new stainless exhaust system fitted.

The vendor has owned the car for four years. It has an MOT until July 2023 issued with no advisories

It retains the from-new ‘pepperpot’ allow wheels and the period ‘Carla Check’ trimmed seats are in good condition.

The engine is said to runs ‘very well with good oil pressure and cruises well’ and ‘ticks over smoothly’.

It is sold with both an indoor and outdoor car cover for extra protection for wherever the new keeper wants to store it.

Back in June, a Ford Capri sold for a new world record price of £74,250.

That model was the ‘Holy Grail’ prototype vehicle used to develop the RS3100 Fast Ford of the era.
