But The Roku Channel app offers up a huge library of content without asking you to pay a penny.

It’s free to download and there’s no mandatory subscription fee either. The catch is that you’ll have to watch ads.

The app might seem surprising given that Roku offers its own devices that rival Amazon Fire TVs.

So it’s easy to miss that The Roku Channel is also available on a host of other gadgets, including Amazon’s own streaming devices.

Roku says it has thousands of free movies and TV shows, and serves up more than 400 live channels.

According to Roku, these channels cover “news, sports, cooking, DIY, music, reality TV, pop culture, true crime, and sci-fi”.

You’ll also get access to free Roku Originals, as well as Spanish-language content (including 65 live channels).

There’s the option to set up an account so you get a more personalized experience, with Roku delivering recommendations based on what you’ve already watched.

“It has beautiful picture quality and does not drop streaming signals …at all (unlike Paramount)! Opens easily and advertising is minimal. Can’t say enough good things about Roku…and I don’t like to review apps normally!”

And one cheery TV fan added: “One of the best things we have ever done!

Their review continued: “We love The Roku Channel, we can watch anything on it for free and are able to add channels we use.

“There are more then 100 channels on the channel guide or you can search for something specific.

“It’s the best thing we have ever done. And if you want to get rid of that extra money you are paying out for a satellite dish this is it!”
