Frank Appel will step down as chief executive of DHL parent Deutsche Post AG in 2023, the express and logistics giant said Wednesday, and will be succeeded by longtime company executive Tobias Meyer.

Mr. Appel, who will leave the top position in May 2023, has led the company for more than 13 years, a tenure that includes a recent period of significant growth as the Covid-19 pandemic drove strong demand for package delivery. DHL’s supply-chain and global-forwarding businesses together rank as the top global third-party logistics provider by 2020 gross revenue, according to research group Armstrong & Associates Inc.

The company, doing business as Deutsche Post DHL, had 2020 revenue of 66.81 billion euros, equivalent to about $75.7 billion, up 5.5% from 2019 and nearly 30% from 2010. This year, the company forecasts record earnings of more than $8.7 billion.

Currently the chief executive of the company’s German post and parcel division, Mr. Meyer joined the business in 2013 and has held leadership roles including chief operations officer at DHL’s global-forwarding unit, which coordinates the shipment of goods from one destination to another using a range of transport options. He became a member of the company’s management board in 2019.

Mr. Meyer “is the ideal choice to continue the very successful path the company has charted,” Nikolaus von Bomhard, chairman of the Deutsche Post AG’s supervisory board, said in a statement.

Mr. Appel, a former executive at consulting firm McKinsey & Co., joined Deutsche Post in 2000 and took over leadership of the company in 2008 at a time of turbulence. The financial crisis was unfolding around the world, and Klaus Zumwinkel, the corporate chief who expanded Deutsche Post from a state-owned postal operator into a global conglomerate, had resigned amid a tax-evasion investigation.

Mr. Appel “made the company into a leading global logistics powerhouse that connects people and markets,” Mr. von Bomhard said. “Under Appel’s leadership, the company has posted one record after the next. Deutsche Post DHL Group has much to thank him for.”
