David Marcus, a longtime Meta Platforms Inc. executive who worked on messaging and led the company’s heavily scrutinized cryptocurrency initiatives, announced his resignation from the company on Tuesday.

Mr. Marcus said he would step down at the end of the year to pursue entrepreneurial projects outside the company. A former PayPal executive, Mr. Marcus joined the company in 2014 to run Facebook Messenger, leading the social-media giant’s efforts to expand its offerings into commerce and customer service.
