The sought-after bags come from the likes of include Tesco, Morrisons, WH Smith, Marks & Spencer, Mister Byrite, HMV, Virgin and John Lewis.

One online shopper said: “Some of the firms have gone bust or have begun to phase out plastic bags to help save the planet, and they are becoming collectors’ items.”

One seller put his unused Kwik Save carrier up for sale on auction site eBay for £225.

The seller wrote: “VGC (very good condition) Unused. One of the first stating re-useable carry bag.”

Another hopeful from Hull advertised his “used, fair” Kwik Save item for a more realistic £20.

A rare Tesco’s bag from the 1980s is up for £4.99 and a John Lewis carrier is being flogged for £6.99.

One from the old Sainsbury’s SavaCentre is going for £1.99, with a discount for multi-buy.
