Users have also told the site they are having issues with Channel 4, with a number of viewers complaining E4 is down.

Down Detector tweeted this evening: “User reports indicate Instagram is having problems since 4:48 PM EDT.”

According to the site, more than 1,000 Instagram users had reported outages by 9.43pm.

Another 777 TV viewers said they were struggling to view Channel 4 services tonight.

Down Detector only tracks outages by collating status reports from a series of sources – including user-submitted errors – on its platform.

It means the outages may be affecting more people than reported.

Instagrammers and Channel 4 fans took to Twitter tonight to complain.

One person asked: “Am I trippin or my IG is not working #instagramdown“.

Another said: “Yup we know why were here again #instagramdown“.

Meanwhile, a baffled viewer trying to watch TV wrote: “Does anyone know what the story is behind @E4Tweets@Channel4’s problems right now?

“I feel like channels would rarely just go down so often. Are they short-staffed? Someone off sick? Bored? Call for help?”

Another added: “E4+1 channel down. No other channels. Just this one!!!!!!”

The Sun has contacted Instagram and Channel 4 for details.
