TRAVEL rules are about to change and holidaying could soon return to normal.
The traffic-light system will be scrapped from October 4 so it’s time to start planning a much-needed trip abroad. Take a break from spending big on your getaway with these simple tricks . . .
Take a break from spending big on your getaway with these simple tricks . . .
CUT CLOTHING COSTS: Dig out some old clothes and turn them into summer holiday outfits — cut away jeans to make shorts and T-shirts into vests — and you could also check out some clearance outlets online. The Next clearance sale has kids’ clothes from just £1.50, while the Mothercare at Boots sale includes 50 per cent off swimsuits and trunks.
LOAD UP A CARD: Get a bank card you can load cash on to or use for free while abroad. The Starling Bank one is accepted in 190 countries, with no fees and no scary exchange rates. Plus, I like the budgeting tools it offers so you can stay on top of spending abroad.
SORT TRAVEL TO AIRPORT EARLY: Book any train you may need as soon as possible and it should be cheaper.
AVOID EARLY OVERSPENDING: It is easy to end up paying inflated airport costs, such as eating breakfast in a restaurant or cafe there before your holiday. Instead, you can take a lot of your own food with you to the departure lounge. Cakes, sandwiches, fruit, vegetables and all other solid food are fine to take through UK airport security checks.
PRE-BOOK HIRE CAR: When it comes to this, and the insurance, doing it when you land can cost a fortune. You can also book your own independent insurance for the hire instead of the extortionate prices hire firms offer. If holidaying with young children, try to bring your own kids’ car seat, as these can end up costing around £100 per week to hire on the spot.
EAT FOR LESS: When eating out as a family while abroad, choose lunchtime or early- evening specials, as these are the best value for money. And swap pricey puddings for a stroll and an ice lolly from a local shop.
