Myth-making is Marvel’s stock in trade, and almost any movie ascending out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point requires a classicist’s devotion to subtextual minutiae. Which is exactly why “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is such a breath of freshly fantastical air: It is—almost—a self-contained and original story. Research not required.
