FALL IS IDEAL for outdoor reading. At the first whiff of crisp autumn air, you can grab a new novel, a cup of mint tea and—if you’re lucky—curl up under a downy throw on a bench plumped with pillows, nestled into an alcove under a tree in your backyard. If you don’t have an outdoor reading nook, first, we feel for you; second, you can make one.

Los Angeles stylist Emily Henderson distinguishes a nook as a shrouded, private area that lets you tuck away in your own orbit. “You can create one with a folding screen or plants,” she said, noting that finding furniture and pillows of outdoor-friendly fabrics such as Sunbrella “is ideal for longevity.”
