Tong Ying-kit case seen as a departure from Hong Kong’s common law traditions, with accused denied bail and a jury trial

The first person charged and tried under Hong Kong’s national security law has been found guilty of terrorism and inciting secession by a panel of three judges.

The landmark case before Hong Kong’s high court came more than a year after the law – imposed by Beijing with the blessing of the city’s leadership – was implemented, despite global condemnation of its content.
