THE school holidays mean more mouths to feed, so stretching your weekly shop is super important.

“Using the freezer to make the most of the food we buy is an easy step we can all take to reducing our carbon footprint,” says Arun Bhatoye from Hisense UK.

“What’s more, plenty of us don’t know how much we can freeze to make our lives a little bit easier!”

From cake to eggs, freeze these lesser-known items to avoid waste and feed the family for less…

CAKE: Bake a bigger cake or double up and cook two and you’ve got snacks for lunches, tea breaks and desserts. Cake can be frozen in slices, just slice when cooled and then pop it in tubs with a piece of greaseproof paper between each slice to stop them sticking together.

MILK: Only 16 per cent of UK shoppers freeze milk, despite it being one of the UK’s top three wasted foods. Divide milk into small quantities and freeze before the “use by” date. Defrost in the fridge and use up in 24 hours. I prefer popping it in ice cube trays, then you can add it straight to the pan if making a bechamel sauce, or a cup of hot tea.

ONION: Only used half an onion? You can freeze the other half. I tend to try and buy reduced veg, chop it up and then put it in portion-sized sandwich bags. You can do this with most root veg. Peppers are a bit watery when you cook from frozen, but fine for a pasta sauce etc.

EGGS: If you have a few eggs that you won’t get to in time, just crack them into an airtight container, blend lightly and freeze.
You must break them and freeze in pots, as they will expand in the shell during the freezing process. Eat within four months.

CHEESE: Grate hard cheese into an airtight container and store in the freezer. You can grab a handful when you need it to top pizza, or lasagne and for cheese on toast. Buy a big slab and your money will go a lot further.
