THE LYNX Effect is driving motorists wild – for the famous deodorant has been voted the top smell for cars.

An in-car air freshener made by the brand scored the highest marks in a scent test by motoring experts, beating a range of aromas from the familiar pine to more whacky ice cream, coconut and even bacon smells now on the market.

The Lynx ‘Black’ variety scored the highest marks

Lynx may be best known for its tongue in cheek ads showing how a puff of its body spray drives women wild but has made a successful transition into improving the whiff of car cabins, said motoring mag Auto Express.

The publication assembled a seven-strong panel to blind test in-car air fresheners that fitted into the air vents in particular, ranking them for ease of use, aroma, value and how well they lasted over a period of three weeks.

The Lynx ‘Black’ variety scored the highest marks. Auto Express said they has successfully transferred the smells from bathroom to car interior.

Auto Express aid: “Despite trying the Black version rather than the ever-popular Africa fragrance, it topped our taste panel’s scores and this is at the heart of its success.

“It fitted the vent well with relatively short prongs reducing the chance of clashing with controls.”

In second place was the Little Trees Invisi Sport and in third the Sensi-Qui Parfum & Gel New Car. Prices vary but then so did the amount of time the smells last for.

But the biggest problem is getting some traditionalists to actually use them at all, admitted Auto Express, as the whole concept divides drivers.

The magazine said: “Some of us may refuse to have one near our car but there are enough drivers who love them enought to turn car air fresheners into big business.

“New car smell, vanilla and mint are still as popular as ever but ice cream, leather and even bacon are some of the newer additions being brought in by the many companies wanting a piece of this lucrative market.”

The traditional pine tree hanging from the rear view mirror is still a popular addition to many cars, particular minicabs and taxis but there are other types too that go in cup holders, under seats or are a simple spray for occasional use.
