Domino’s Pizza is in a desperate scramble to hire 5,000 staff as furloughed workers head back to their old jobs.
Hairdressers, barmen and taxi drivers took up jobs delivering and cooking pizzas in lockdown – but are returning to previous work.
That has left Domino’s searching for replacements as it prepares for a boom during the European 2020 football championships, which kick off on June 11.

Domino’s, which has 1,207 UK sites, said it was ‘overwhelmed’ by the response of applicants when the firm created 6,000 roles in March 2020 due to an increased need for delivery drivers.
As part of the recruitment drive, the business will also create 1,400 work placements as part of Kickstart, a Government initiative in England, Scotland and Wales. Shares rose 1.4 per cent, or 5p, to 370.2 per cent yesterday.
The company, which has 3,300 directly-employed staff, operates as a franchise offering marketing, property advice and ingredients in return for a royalty fee.
Group sales rose 18.7 per cent to £371.1m in the 13 weeks to March 28. Analysts have said the figures were flattered by the cut in VAT from 20 per cent to 5 per cent, and warned that the takeaway giant was failing to keep up with rivals such as Just Eat.
