Allies of jailed opposition leader held as Russian police close parts of Moscow and other cities

Russian police have arrested key supporters of Alexei Navalny and begun closing down central squares in Moscow and other cities before demonstrations planned for Wednesday evening in support of the jailed opposition leader.

One of Navalny’s top aides, Lyubov Sobol, was dragged from a taxi by uniformed police on Wednesday morning, her lawyer said. A press aide to Navalny, Kira Yarmysh, was also arrested by police outside her apartment. The Kremlin critics’ regional headquarters have also been raided as police seek to disrupt, and eventually liquidate, his political organisation across Russia.
