Bosses at Marston’s have rejected a £666million takeover offer from a private equity firm saying it ‘very significantly undervalues’ the company.

Shares in the 1,700-pub and brewing business jumped 6 per cent on the back of the 105p-per-share bid from Platinum Equity Advisors.

It followed two other bids, at 88p and 95p, tabled by the US firm in December. The pub company’s stock was changing hands for around 75p last week before news of the takeover interest surfaced.

It was 87.3p last night, still over a fifth below the 106p pre-pandemic price, something which the board highlighted in their response.

It is the latest foreign bid for a British firm amid growing confidence in UK equities following Brexit.

Foreign investors are also hunting to buy pub and restaurant businesses which have taken a battering in the pandemic.

The firm said its board had ‘unanimously rejected the [Platinum] proposal on the basis that it very significantly undervalues Marston’s’,
