Eastern England, the north-east and Scotland woke to thick layer of snow on Saturday

Parts of the UK experienced between 4cm-8cm (1.5in-3in) of snow to start the weekend, while forecasters warned of heavy rainfall next week.

An amber weather alert for snow was in place for some areas on Saturday morning, with people told to expect travel delays, power cuts and a chance that rural communities could be “cut off”.
