Casualties reported as mayor of town of Petrinja says ‘half of the city no longer exists’

A strong earthquake hit central Croatia on Tuesday, causing major damage to homes and other buildings in a town south-east of the capital. Authorities said a girl was killed and at least 20 people were injured in the quake.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center said a magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit 46km (28 miles) south-east of Zagreb at 11.19 UTC. Initial reports said the earthquake caused extensive damage, collapsing roofs, building facades and even some entire buildings.
