CRUNCHY Nut Cornflakes are the nation’s favourite breakfast cereal, a poll found.

The honeyed treat — created in Manchester in 1980 — beat classic Kellogg’s cornflakes to the top spot.

Crunchy Nut was ranked No 1 by 35 per cent, while 28 per cent preferred the original version created by William Kellogg in the 1800s.

About 39million boxes of the nutty variety and 35million boxes of normal cornflakes are produced by the firm in the UK every year.

Coco Pops and Weetabix came third and fourth, while Frosties made up the top five cereals.

Eighteen per cent have their bowlful with just milk, while 19 per cent sprinkle sugar, 23 per cent add banana, 18 per cent strawberries and 17 per cent honey.

A third of us say eating cereal takes us back to our childhood.

The survey of 2,000 adults by Perspectus Global also found 37 per cent of us admit to having cereal as an evening snack.
