Apple has shipped 50.1 million iPhones in the first three months of 2024, giving it a 17.3 per cent grip on the global mobile market.

But Samsung sold 60.1 million phones, taking its market share to 20.8 per cent.

The South Korean brand — which launched its Galaxy S24 in January — previously held the top spot for 12 years before US firm Apple took the title last year after releasing the iPhone 15.

Ryan Reith at IDC said: “While Apple managed to capture the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully reasserted itself as leading provider in the first quarter of 2024.”
