BRITISH streaming app BritBox has just received its final death knell, as Amazon has revealed when it will disappear from Prime Video.

In early February, the UK’s biggest broadcasters confirmed that BritBox, which launched in 2019, would be shutting down.

ITV CEO Carolyn McCall said the move to axe the BritBox standalone app formed part of ITV's plans to streamline its services

Viewers had hoped that it might stay alive in some form via Prime Video, where viewers could combine their subscriptions for both streaming services.

However, ITV quickly stamped out those dreams earlier this month.

Then last week, Amazon removed the BritBox ‘subscribe’ button in another sign of the app’s oncoming retirement.

Now Amazon has revealed that viewers watching BritBox via Prime will actually lose streaming access days before everyone else.

The tech giant has said BritBox will no longer be available on Prime Video Channels – even for existing subscribers – from April 27, 2024.

BritBox will then cease operating as a standalone service on 30 April.

From that date onwards, BritBox content will only be available via ITVX or BBC iPlayer.

How to cancel BritBox subscription on Prime

Some BritBox fans subscribing through Amazon Prime have experienced trouble cancelling their memberships.

They say they can’t figure out how to cancel without calling off their Prime Video subscription too.

So we’re here to clear up the confusion.

BritBox via Prime is a Video Channel Subscription – and it’s not the only one.

You can cancel Video Channel Subscriptions without cancelling your Prime Video.

Simply sign in to your Amazon account and go to Manage Your Prime Video Channels.

When you’re there, select Prime Video Channels and find the subscription you want to cancel.

Then select Cancel Channel and confirm – it’s that easy!

Amazon adds: “If you’re offered a self-service refund, and choose to accept it, your cancellation will immediately take effect.

“Otherwise, your subscription end date displays on the confirmation screen.”

Streamlining efforts

ITV CEO Carolyn McCall said the move to axe the BritBox standalone app formed part of ITV’s plans to streamline its services.

“In 2024, the BritBox UK service on Amazon Prime Video Channels and the BritBox UK standalone app will close as we further simplify our offering,” she said.

“This will consolidate all our subscribers under one ITVX Premium brand and will give us complete ownership of the subscriber base.

“The closure of these services is expected to impact subscriber numbers and subscription revenues in 2024.”

It comes just days after ITV quietly axed its Catchup channel on Prime Video.

The channel, previously known as ITV Hub+, allowed Prime Video viewers to dodge adverts at a cheaper cost.

For advert-haters, the Prime Video version was cheaper than a full ITVX Premium subscription – and allowed access to more content.

Now it seems that all signs are pointing towards the ITVX app, which will become the only place to catch up on missed shows from the broadcasting house.

How can I watch ITVX?

ITV is not currently available on some older TVs.

A range of Humax Freeview and Freesat boxes, as well as certain models of Samsung Smart TVs, are unable to support the new ITVX app.

ITVX doesn’t work on some older iPhones and iPads either.

For viewers with older telly boxes, ITV Catchup on Prime Video was the only way to watch ITV without an Amazon Fire Stick or Google Chromecast.

ITV has more information on where you can watch ITVX here.
