PLAYSTATION owners who live in the UK could be owed hundreds in compensation thanks to a one-of-a-kind lawsuit.

With payouts estimated between £67 and £562 per PlayStation user, the company could be forced to pay out for years of ‘ripping off’ customers, if the case is successful.

The lawsuit concerns anyone who accessed the PlayStation Store during the time period, no matter which console.

Anyone who made a purchase via the PlayStation Store, whether that is for full games, DLC, microtransactions, or subscriptions between August 19, 2016, and August 19, 2022, could be eligible for a payout.

The lawsuit against PlayStation is based on the 30% commission that the company charges for all purchases made on the PlayStation Store.

This high percentage for prices is allegedly ‘ripping off’ customers, developers and publishers, consumer rights campaigner Alex Neill said to Sky News.

A new collective proceedings order has been issued for the case, meaning that the lawsuit will continue.

PlayStation isn’t the only gaming company that takes this huge percentage of money in commission.

Nintendo, Xbox, Steam, as well as mobile platforms like Google Play and the App Store, all add a large commission on games to their prices.

However, PlayStation has been singled out in this instance, and if PlayStation users are eligible for compensation, then it could spur lawsuits against other platforms.

It might even allow similar lawsuits to be filed by residents of other countries.

The prices of video games have risen dramatically over the years, and these large commissions taken by storefronts only further increase the cost for gamers.

It is unclear whether PlayStation will have to pay compensation to players in this case, but the company has had to pay out to players in the past.

Back in 2014, Sony had to pay PlayStation Vita owners compensation after the company falsely advertised that the Vita would be able to connect to the PS3 for remote play.

Vita players were offered a cash payout, store credit, or a gaming bundle as compensation.
