Falling profits at Barclays have knocked £55million off the value of its bonus pool, it was revealed yesterday.

Bankers shared £1.75billion for 2023, down 2.5 per cent on a year earlier.

Barclays said this reflected ‘lower year-on-year financial outcomes in some business areas’ amid a slump in income for its global markets division and a plunge in investment banking fees.

Chief executive CS Venkatakrishnan was among those losing out, with his overall pay package down 11pc to £4.6million.

Venkat, 58, saw his basic salary rise by 3.3 per cent to £2.9million. However, his annual bonus was half a million pounds lower.

Meanwhile, the number of employees in the top pay bracket – those earning more than €1million (£855,000) – fell from 698 to 668.
