It’s always the thought that counts . . .

TOKEN GESTURE: Create a booklet of personalised love tokens offering special favours or pledges to do household tasks. You could also write a voucher for a home-made dinner, a movie night or a relaxing massage.

SAY CHEESE: Compile a scrapbook or photo album featuring your top moments together. You could do this for relationship milestones or your best holidays.

Add captions and dates and you could even include business cards from some favourite restaurants you have visited on date nights.

MEMORY LANE: Fill up a jar with hand-written notes that recall favourite memories, inside jokes or reasons why you love your partner. Decorate the jar with ribbon or stickers for that little extra touch.

RHYME TIME: Find a romantic love verse at poetryfoundation.org and write it out for your partner. Put it in an old picture frame that can be kept and treasured.

If you don’t have one, head to a charity shop to find a bargain frame. Another great option is to design your own digital poem, using the templates at canva.com, and print it out to frame for a budget gift that has meaning and looks professional.

HOT CHOCS: Make a batch of chocolate truffles using just two ingredients. Warm up a tin of condensed milk and about 4tbsps of cocoa powder on a low heat for ten minutes.

IT’S ALL ROSY: If you do want to give flowers, just the one may do — pop into a Lidl store and pick up a single red deluxe rose for £2.49.
